~~~ Ohio Lt. Governor Lee Fisher... launched The Business Resource Network, a collaborative business retention and expansion program in Trumbull, Mahoning and Columbian counties in northeastern Ohio saying, "This will emerge as both a state and national model for successful business outreach." "This first-of-its-kind innovative approach is especially critical during the current challenging economic environment," he added. The Business Resource Network utilizes the Synchronist Business Information System™ and Sync2Group™ (our Web 2.0 team collaboration toolkit for economic development clients) to create a collaborative environment for workforce, chambers, and community partners to build, store, and share time-sensitive information on their work with existing businesses. ~~~ How do you define... 'advanced manufacturing?' It is a term used frequently in economic development; however, what is an advanced manufacturer? A reader in Wisconsin is trying to nail down a definition. If you have a definition or can identify the components (criteria) required to differentiate between an advanced manufacturer and a non-advanced manufacturer, please share. ecanada@blanecanada.com One more thing. Do you have programs designed to assist advanced manufacturers? Let us know what you are doing as well as the criteria for participation so we can share, with credit of course. ecanada@blanecanada.com
~~~ The most fundamental... of all marketing mistakes is the failure to create a database. Seven out of 10 economic development organizations we work with do not have a database of the primary companies in the community. Go figure.
~~~ Existing business strategy... at the state level is less defined than hoped. New research findings documented 20 of 22 state level strategies are straight forward: 1) limit surprises, and 2) generate visible activity – a defense if there is a surprise. Conducted for the State of Louisiana by Competitive Strategies Group, LLC and Blane, Canada Ltd. the research was focused on identifying best state practices and morphed into a quest for the underlying strategy to provide guidance for LDED’s new existing business program. How can we help you take your program to a new level? Call Eric 630-462-9222 ecanada@blanecanada.com
~~~ Congratulations Tammy... Tammy Mair, Blane, Canada’s ace software developer, trainer, and all around IT authority was selected by publisher Cengage Learning for an inside cover "cameo" interview for an upcoming text book for aspiring IT professionals. Well done, Tammy!
~~~ "Ideas are cheap. It's implementation that creates the real value. Ideas by themselves are worthless. Plans are nothing... unless they are followed with action. An idea without a strategy, without action, is useless. As Arnold Glasgow said, "Ideas not coupled with action never become bigger than the brain cells they occupied." ~~~ A radical approach... several years ago, frustrated with our inability to create meaningful networking opportunities with other top ED executives at the hit-n-run conferences in economic development, we joined Ron Kitchens and Jones Hooks on an experiment. This year, Engage 2008 will host the fifth class of 25 top economic development CEOs from across the country in a one-of-a-kind 2-day networking event in San Antonio. Sometimes you just have take action to achieve the goals you seek. Share your thoughts. ecanada@blanecanada.com
~~~ "I used to get your newsletter... when I worked in Indiana and found it very informative. Thank you for adding me to the mailing list"(KY) Forward this copy of ED Marketing Letter to new economic developers in your area. Let them know you are thinking about them.
~~~ "I was struck... by the article 'Aggressive web strategy (ED Marketing Letter, March).' The writer concludes that organizational web sites should have a back door that is well lit. I couldn't agree more although I might go further than that and suggest the front door should be well lit also. I've lost count of how many times I've gotten to a web page that is supposed to represent the community, county or ED organization and not been able to find a telephone number! -- there is NO contact information. We really should be beyond the 'letting our fingers can do the walking.' We should be able to get to full contact information via the Internet now." Deborah, TX
